Published on August 7, 2020, a report from Migori GK Prison revealed a shocking number of inmates testing positive for COVID-19.

With 96 confirmed cases, the correctional facility has become the latest hotspot in the ongoing pandemic.

According to Nyanza Regional Prisons Commander Hassan Bugu, the prison has set up a quarantine block to isolate inmates who test positive.

Similar measures have been implemented in Kisii and Kisumu facilities to prevent the spread of the virus.

Migori Health Executive Isca Oluoch has expressed concerns over the measures to contain local transmissions in police cells and prisons.

"The current scenario witnessed in the county is a culmination of several factors, including congestion at the correctional facilities and local transmissions," Dr. Oluoch stated.

"Our main challenge is containing local transmissions in police cells and the prisons, which is currently posing a big threat to the fight against the virus," he added.
