The Emotional Toll of Losing Patients: A Doctor's Story

As the world grappled with the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, healthcare workers were at the forefront of the fight against the virus. However, their emotional toll extends beyond the pandemic, as they often face the heartbreaking reality of losing patients in their care.

On August 7, 2020, cardiothoracic surgeon Joe Ruturi shared a poignant story on Twitter, recounting the loss of his friend while trying to resuscitate him. The incident left him heartbroken, not only because of the loss but also because of the difficult task of breaking the news to the patient's family.

"Today I had to resuscitate my friend in hospital. It did not go well. Then I had to inform his father and watch him absorb all this. Heartbreaking. Rest in peace buddy. I can remember the day I met you 30yrs ago this Month at University," Ruturi wrote on his Twitter page.

His story resonated with many, who took to the comment section to offer condolences and support. Experts say that medics can deal with feelings of grief and failure by reflecting on their care, remembering positive interactions with patients, and expressing their emotions.

For nurse Margret Musa, losing her first patient was a traumatic experience that taught her the importance of faith, acceptance, and doing her best to care for each patient. "It was not easy but I have learned to take great comfort from my faith, acceptance that death is part of life, and, in all cases, I know that I have done my very best to care and advocate for each of my patients," she stated.

Dr. Margaret Njuguna echoed Musa's sentiments, saying that losing a patient is a shocking and traumatizing experience that can leave doctors questioning their actions. "There's a feeling of dissatisfaction when the patient dies, a doctor keeps asking if they did the right thing to save a patient's life," she said.

As healthcare workers continue to face the emotional toll of losing patients, it is essential to acknowledge their struggles and provide them with the support they need to cope with their emotions.
