Kenyan Artists Respond to Covid-19 with Art

August 7, 2020

While the Covid-19 pandemic has brought widespread suffering, it has also inspired a creative response from Kenyan and African artists. A group exhibition at One Off Contemporary Art Gallery Limited, 'Covid 19 – Social Distancing,' showcases over 40 artworks that reflect the impact of the pandemic.

The exhibition was conceived by Carol Lees, the gallery's founding gallerist, who invited artists to respond to the theme of Covid-19. The result is a diverse collection of works that range from paintings and prints to photography and digital art.

Some artists have taken a more literal approach, incorporating masks and social distancing into their work. For example, Margaret Njeri's 'Masked Bride' and Esau Osomo's 'Mother and Child' feature masked figures, while Munene Kariithi, Richard Kimathi, and Rashid Diab's works highlight the importance of social distancing.

However, many artists have taken a more abstract approach, using the pandemic as a metaphor for broader themes. Mark Kassi's 'Multicoloured Lungs' is a striking example, depicting the lungs as if they were hanging out to dry, while Wallace Juma's 'Split Head' illustrates the mental toll of the lockdown.

Other artists have focused on the natural world, using the pandemic as an opportunity to reflect on the beauty of the outdoors. Paul Kidero's 'Solitary Man by the Sea' and David Marrian's 'Chapel in a Remote Region' both celebrate the restorative power of nature.

The exhibition also features works that highlight the resilience of peasant survivors who continue to live and work despite the pandemic. Esther Mukuhi's 'Women at the Market' is a powerful example, depicting women selling their wares in a crowded market.

The 'Covid 19 – Social Distancing' exhibition is a testament to the creativity and resilience of Kenyan and African artists. It runs until August 23 at One Off Contemporary Art Gallery Limited.
