This archive report was first published on 7 August 2020.

Transnational Bank Limited, now under Access Bank, has been struggling to contain a major cyber attack that has compromised the email and login details of its staff.

According to reports, the bank's online banking services have been down for days, leaving customers frustrated and concerned about their accounts.

On social media, the bank announced that services had been restored, but replies beneath the message suggest that the system downtime is far from over.

Customers have taken to Twitter to report discrepancies in their accounts, with some claiming that money has been withdrawn from their accounts without their knowledge or consent.

Two articles have previously reported that hackers stole over 2 terabytes of data from the bank and demanded a ransom.

Kenyan Business Feed has also exposed an audit of the bank's 'information and communication technology controls' conducted by Ernst & Young LLP, which revealed serious system weaknesses.

The editor of this site can confirm that the hackers made away with the entire list of email addresses and passwords of the staff in Excel format.

Transnational Bank's acquisition by Access Bank was completed at the beginning of February 2020.

The bank's struggle to contain the attack has been described as a 'gimmick', with the explanation that they 'are working on it' being deemed untrue.

Whether this is an act of sabotage or a true hacking experience will be known in the near future.
