On the first Friday of August, beer enthusiasts around the world come together to celebrate International Beer Day. However, in Kenya, the festivities have been dampened by the July ban on alcohol sales in restaurants and bars.
The ban, implemented to curb the spread of COVID-19, has left thousands of workers in the hospitality industry at risk of losing their jobs. Restaurants and bars are pleading with the government to lift the ban, citing the economic impact on their businesses.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), young people must take responsibility and ask themselves if they really need to attend parties. The organisation warned that bars and house parties are major obstacles in the fight against COVID-19.
As the world celebrates International Beer Day, Kenyans are being urged to practice social distancing and avoid close contact and gatherings. The 'new' holiday has come at a time when party-goers are being asked to make sacrifices for the greater good.
