Published on August 6, 2020, a Kirinyaga politician, Muteti Murimi, who was a 2022 parliamentary aspirant, has contracted Covid-19 after meeting Deputy President William Ruto on July 20, 2020.
Muteti met Ruto alongside a group of young entrepreneurs from the Mt. Kenya Region for a consultative meeting and photo session.
Responding to accusations of flouting Covid-19 rules, Muteti stated, "I tested positive two weeks ago but I have already recovered and I am now negative. I was on self-isolation and was treated from home. I was well when I went to Karen that Monday (July 20), so the issue of the DP should not arise here."
He added, "All measures were observed during our meeting with him. Why would the DP isolate yet I was not sick when I visited his residence?"
According to Muteti, he suspected to have contracted the virus while attending another meeting later that week, which led to him experiencing chest complications and being hospitalized.
He urged, "COVID is real but not a death sentence and so we must stop politicizing the issue and focus on creating awareness."
Images from the meeting showed some attendees not wearing masks, and social distancing was not maintained during the photo session.
