On August 6, 2020, the Nyanza Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) forum gave the government 14 days to address the issue of compensation for the 2007/2008 post-election violence victims from the Nyanza region.
Speaking in Kisumu, the chairman of the forum, Jared Otieno Odhiambo, stated that they have been neglected for too long and demanded that the government pays them as their counterparts from other regions.
The IDPs from Siaya, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Homabay, and Migori are appealing to President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto, and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to intervene and have them compensated like their counterparts from Central and Rift Valley regions.
According to the IDPs, they have been deserted by both National and local leaders despite having suffered during the post-election period.
They lamented that they have only been given Ksh 10,000 as initial compensation, while others were compensated to a tune of Ksh 400,000 and settled on land.
