On August 3, 2020, Tanzanian goalkeeper David Mapigano handed in a request to leave Gor Mahia, and the club agreed to his departure.

According to Gor Mahia Chairman Ambrose Rachier, Mapigano felt he was not playing while the Tanzanian league was on, and it was better for him to pursue his interests in Tanzania.

Mapigano joined Gor Mahia in July 2018 from Singida United and had a three-year contract that was supposed to end in July 2021.

However, he had earlier insisted that he would only return to the country and commit his future to Gor Mahia after receiving all his payments.

The news of his departure comes just weeks after a new goalkeeper, Levis Opiyo, landed at the club, while another custodian, Fredrick Odhiambo, exited.

Plans are underway to fill the gap left by Mapigano, with the club talking to another local goalkeeper, who is reportedly Western Stima custodian Samuel Njau.
