On August 6, 2020, a COVID-19 technical assistance team led by Dr. Evanson Kamuri, CEO of Kenyatta National Hospital, visited various isolation centers in Kirinyaga County to assess the county's preparedness against the spread of COVID-19.

During the tour, the team observed that the county had set up around 200 beds in identified isolation centers, including Kerugoya Level Four Hospital, Kimbimbi Health Center, Baricho Health Center, Kianyaga Health Center, and Sagana Sub-County Hospital.

Dr. Kamuri emphasized the need for counties to establish comprehensive isolation centers that can cater to all the medical needs of COVID-19 patients.

Dr. Githinji Gitahi, Group CEO of Amref Health Africa, also part of the delegation, urged county governments to mobilize resources through multi-agency response teams to enhance their capacity to manage the pandemic.

The team recommended that counties consider converting one health center into a COVID-19 center, with alternative facilities providing primary healthcare services to the community.

Since the opening of inter-county borders, Kirinyaga County has reported 27 cases of COVID-19, with no fatalities and three patients successfully treated and discharged.
