Dr Hawa Abdi, a celebrated figure in Somalia, has left a lasting legacy in the lives of countless individuals she touched through her humanitarian work.
On Wednesday, her family announced that Dr Abdi had passed away in Mogadishu, Somalia, at the age of 73.
According to her children, Dr Abdi's death was sudden and unexpected, with no prior illness reported.
Dr Abdi's remarkable journey began in the 1970s when she was trained in the former Soviet Union. She went on to establish a hospital on the outskirts of Mogadishu in the 1980s, marking the beginning of her tireless efforts to provide healthcare to those in need.
Over the years, Dr Abdi expanded her healthcare services, opening several facilities across Somalia. Her selfless dedication earned her numerous accolades, including a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2012 and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Turkish government in 2018.
