On June 28, a daring escape from Kamiti Maximum Security Prison was foiled when the convict, Samuel Gitau Githinji, was caught and charged with escaping from lawful custody.
Gitau, 22, pleaded guilty to the charges before chief magistrate Joyce Gandani of Kibera law courts and was handed a one-year sentence.
Gitau was serving a three-year sentence for burglary and stealing, which he had been handed by Kikuyu law courts in November last year. He claimed to have served six months of his sentence.
According to reports, Gitau was working at the prison's dairy farm when he noticed that the officers and other inmates were not paying attention to him. He took advantage of the situation and ran away, abandoning a wheelbarrow he was using to carry manure.
A manhunt was launched, but Gitau was not rearrested during the subsequent search. He was eventually tracked down to his home in Kikuyu by the police.
