Published on August 5, 2020, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has given individuals and businesses until August 30 to apply for a waiver on penalties and interest on defaulted taxes.

The affected parties owe an estimated Sh250 billion in tax arrears, and those seeking waivers must meet the requirements outlined in the Tax Procedures Act of 2015.

According to the law, applicants must provide proof of financial distress or show that KRA erred in slapping them with fines.

Elizabeth Meyo, KRA's Commissioner for Domestic Taxes, said the taxman has finalised the roll-out of the system enhancements for processing waiver applications and is clearing the backlog.

Applicants will be required to submit supporting evidence within 30 days, and those who fail to do so will be demanded to pay the full amount of penalties and interest accrued.

As part of its efforts to stem perennial missed collection targets, KRA had last year identified tax cheats and intensified efforts to smoke out defaulters.
