As the country battles the COVID-19 pandemic, the Council of Governors is facing a financial crisis due to the Senate's failure to resolve the revenue allocation formula impasse.
On August 5, 2020, the Council's Chairperson, Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, pleaded with the Senate to adopt the existing formula or resolve the new one to prevent counties from running out of funds.
According to Oparanya, the continued adjournments by the Senate indicate a lot of division, yet there should be no impasse since an existing formula is available.
The Governors have warned that counties have almost depleted their funds, which will affect critical services, including healthcare, at a time when the country needs them most.
They have urged health workers' unions to consider the current stalemate before downing their tools and be empathetic to the suffering Kenyans.
Should the Senate adopt the 3rd generation formula, the Governors propose that counties that will lose money be cushioned against the deficit to meet their already formulated budgets.
