On August 5, 2020, the Kenyan health ministry reported 671 new COVID-19 cases, including a 94-year-old individual, raising the total cases since March to 23,873.
Of the new cases, 38 were foreigners, and the age range included a 3-year-old child. The cases comprised 413 males and 258 females.
The majority of the new cases were reported in Nairobi, with 376 cases, followed by Kiambu with 112 cases. Other counties with significant cases included Machakos, Kisumu, Kajiado, Busia, Uasin Gishu, and Nyeri.
Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe commended Mombasa for maintaining a suppressed infection rate, with only six new cases reported. He noted that this trend indicated a potential recovery for the county, which had previously been one of the hardest hit.
During the same press briefing, Kagwe announced 603 recoveries, including 436 individuals placed under the home-based care program. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a balance between new cases and recoveries, stating, "This is a good balance when the recovered cases are equal to new cases, it means we will admit new cases without stretching our capacity."
Additionally, the Ministry of Health reported that a total of 329,123 samples had been tested for COVID-19, with 9,930 documented recoveries and 391 total fatalities.
