On August 5, 2020, the world lost a complex figure in Tanzania's history - former President Benjamin William Mkapa. His sudden death was a shock to many, and as the nation mourns his passing, it's worth reflecting on his legacy.

As a young country, Tanzania has been fortunate to have had several administrations, each leaving behind a legacy of their own. President Mkapa's presidency, which spanned several years, was marked by a unique blend of accomplishments and controversies.

One of the most notable aspects of his presidency was his introduction of monthly addresses to the nation. While these addresses often started on a positive note, they would eventually devolve into lectures on fiscal responsibility and work ethics. His was a cantankerous and paternalistic approach to governance, yet it was also oddly quiet and thoughtful.

As I reflect on his presidency, I am reminded of the emergence of broadcasting in Tanzania during his time in office. The introduction of ITV, a local television station, marked a significant milestone in the country's media landscape. His presidency also represented a time of great change and discovery for many Tanzanians, including myself.

While President Mkapa's legacy is complex and multifaceted, one thing is certain - his passing has left a void in the country's history. As we say our final goodbyes, it's worth taking a moment to reflect on the impact he had on Tanzania and its people.
