On August 5, 2020, Rachael Wambui's life changed forever when she won Sh1,597,087 on Odibets, a sports betting platform.
Wambui, a trader in Nairobi's Eastleigh area, had been a soccer betting fan for a long time. 'Before striking it big, I used to place my bets on my favourite teams as I have always loved football,' she said during an interview with journalists.
She had placed her bets on several teams, and all of them had gone through, leaving her waiting for the Arsenal vs Chelsea game to end. 'The congratulatory message came in at around 9:45 PM and I could not hide my joy as I found myself jumping up and down not believing what I had seen with my eyes,' Wambui recalled.
Wambui's win was not an isolated case. In the past, other lucky winners had also taken home significant amounts of money on Odibets. John Matoke won Sh1,173,000 after placing two separate bets of Sh500 and Sh300, while John Githaiga won Sh505,692 after placing an 11-team multi-bet prediction that sailed through.
