Published on August 5, 2020, a diplomatic row erupted between Kenya and Tanzania after Kenya omitted Tanzania from a list of countries exempt from 14-day quarantine for passengers entering Kenya.

The move sparked a retaliatory approach from Tanzania, which decided to change its position on Kenya Airways flights into the country.

Every passenger from Tanzania entering Kenya will now be quarantined for 14 days, regardless of their Covid-19 status, as cases of the disease have decreased to negligible levels in Tanzania.

The Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) wrote to the Government of Kenya, and the response to this letter will inform President John Magufuli's administration on the right decision to take regarding Kenya Airways flights.

According to Dr. Leonard Chamuriho, Permanent Secretary in the ministry of Works, Transport and Communications, the letter highlights the reciprocity nature of the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (Basa) between the two countries.

"This is a technical issue. The letter explains everything clearly [regarding Tanzania's concerns] and that nothing can be done until what is contained in the letter gets worked on," Dr. Chamuriho said.
