On August 4, 2020, 22 Kisii County officials were ordered to self-quarantine following the death of a colleague who exhibited Covid-19-like symptoms. The deceased was pronounced dead on arrival at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.
Dr. Richard Onkware, the County Public Health and Sanitation officer, had ordered the officials to self-quarantine, citing the need to trace all officers who may have been in contact with the deceased. However, after the test results came out negative, Dr. Onkware canceled the order.
According to Governor James Ongwae, the county had recorded 29 positive cases, with 16 people having been discharged from the County Isolation Center. Two others had succumbed to the disease. Governor Ongwae also announced that the hospital had prepared 310 beds in compliance with the Ministry of Health directive on Covid-19 emergency preparations.
Speaking about the loss of a nurse, Maryanne Awour, who succumbed to the disease while expecting her firstborn baby, Governor Ongwae said, 'I had keenly been following on the progress of our dear nurse Maryanne Awour who succumbed on Sunday. It was tough for her to battle the disease while still expecting to deliver her firstborn baby. We leave everything to God and pray for the affected families.'
