On August 4, 2020, a devastating explosion rocked the city of Beirut, Lebanon, claiming over 100 lives and injuring over 4,000 people.

President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya sent a condolence message to his Lebanese counterpart, President Michel Aoun, expressing his deepest sympathies for the loss of life and destruction caused by the tragedy.

According to the Presidential Strategic Communication Unit, President Kenyatta pledged support to the Lebanese government and wished them 'God's comfort as they come to terms with the regrettable destruction of their iconic capital city.'

The explosions were reportedly caused by a fire igniting 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate left unsecured in a warehouse, equivalent to a 3.3-magnitude earthquake felt as far away as Cyprus, some 150 miles to the northwest.
