On April 23, 2019, Joyce Wairimu Kariuki, a 62-year-old grandmother, appeared before Loitoktok Law Courts charged with robbery with violence. She was subsequently sentenced to 35 years in prison.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Wairimu was arrested following numerous reports of stolen motor vehicles, particularly lorries, in Nakuru, Nairobi, and Mombasa between 2018 and 2019.

DCI detectives say they narrowed down on Wairimu as the prime suspect despite her release from Shimo La Tewa GK Prison after serving a 15-year jail term.

Wairimu's arrest and subsequent sentencing have been met with shock, given her age and previous conviction.
