Published on August 5, 2020, Artcaffe, a Kenyan restaurant chain, has found itself at the center of a social media storm after announcing an art competition with prizes that have left many questioning the logic behind them.

The competition, dubbed #ARTofthecity, invited entries from Kenyan creatives, with the promise of showcasing their artwork on take-away coffee cups. However, the prizes offered have left many feeling underwhelmed.

According to Artcaffe, the first prize winner will receive an exhibition space in one of their restaurants for two months or an internship with the Artcaffe Design Team for two months, along with free coffee for a year. The second prize is free coffee for six months, while the third prize is free coffee for three months.

However, many have taken to social media to express their disappointment and frustration with the prizes, with some questioning the value of free coffee as compensation for artistic work.

"Shame on you Artcaffe. No really, shame on you," tweeted Elayne (@ElayneOkaya). "1 coffee a day for a year is Kes 91,250. Offer that instead of a cup of coffee that no one needs. Also, you know the winner won’t be able to redeem everyday, that’s why you offered this."

Others have also expressed their disappointment, with some questioning the decision-making process behind the prizes.

"I just want to know why y’all thought this would be a good idea. How many people were in the team?? Was there a vote? Did they all agree that coffee and exposure is appropriate compensation for such work?" tweeted missy (@nc_missy).

Artcaffe has since faced a backlash on social media, with many calling for the restaurant to reconsider their prizes.
