Published on August 5, 2020, the storm's impact was felt across the region, with residents like Rosie Iannotta, a retired teacher, experiencing a terrifying power surge that melted electrical lines on her block in Auburndale, Queens.

Ms. Iannotta, who had previously invested in a generator after enduring earlier storms, was able to capture the event on camera with her phone, saying, "I was freaking out. Luckily, no one was hurt. I'm just glad that everyone was safe."

As the storm raged on, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority suspended aboveground subway service, Metro-North Railroad, and the Long Island Rail Road, while the Staten Island Ferry was also suspended. At least 55 flights were canceled at Kennedy International Airport, and 78 at La Guardia Airport.

Transit authority interim president Sarah Feinberg expressed uncertainty about when full subway service would resume, stating, "As soon as the trees and debris are removed, we'll obviously be back to full service."

By late afternoon, the rains had passed, but stiff winds continued, creating an unusual contrast with the sunny skies. The National Weather Service reported at least two tornadoes: one in Strathmere, South Jersey, and another near Dover, Delaware.
