On July 31, 2020, a brazen robbery with violence incident shook the quiet town of Matuu in Machakos County. The perpetrators were none other than three detectives from the Special Service Unit (SSU) of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
According to the DCI, the rogue officers, identified as William Mutua, Henry Maitai, and Jonathan Sankale, had been tipped off about Baraka Gas Company's alleged illegal activities. The detectives raided the facility, intercepting the company's surveillance car and confiscating mobile phones from the workers.
As the investigation unfolds, it has been revealed that the rogue officers were paid a total of Ksh.370,000 through various M-Pesa and Safaricom channels. The money was allegedly transferred to their personal accounts in exchange for their services.
The DCI has since arrested the three detectives, disarming them and taking them into custody. The incident has sparked outrage and raised questions about the integrity of the DCI and the need for stricter internal controls.
