On August 4, 2020, a heated dispute erupted between Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and Nairobi Metropolitan Services Director General Mohamed Badi over the demolitions of Mukuru slums.
According to sources, Sonko accused Badi of interfering with his administration's efforts to improve the area, sparking a bitter exchange between the two officials.
While Sonko maintained that the demolitions were necessary to improve the living conditions of the residents, Badi countered that the move was a violation of the rights of the slum dwellers.
