On July 7, 2020, William, a 32-year-old resident of Diani, Mombasa, underwent a medical check to ensure he had no underlying conditions.
Eighteen days later, he and two friends tested positive for Covid-19 after exposing themselves to the virus by interacting with a friend's relative who was under home care isolation.
"We felt that if you expose yourself to Covid, you have better chances of improving the antibodies in your blood plasma to prevent yourself from getting re-infected or getting the worst form of it when you are infected," William said in a phone-in conversation with Spice FM.
However, Dr. Moses Masika, a virologist from the University of Nairobi, warned that such an approach is a 'risky gamble' with their lives.
"I think William is a good gambler, but knowing what we know about the virus, it's something I wouldn't do," Dr. Masika said.
