On August 4, 2020, Bayer Leverkusen announced that midfielder Nadiem Amiri would be missing the Europa League clash against Rangers due to COVID-19 contact.

Amiri, 23, had brief contact in private with someone who had the coronavirus and has been separated from the squad for a week.

The club holds a 3-1 lead in the Europa League after winning in Glasgow before the competition was halted in March due to the pandemic.

Should Leverkusen reach the Europa League quarter-finals, they would face Inter Milan or Getafe next Monday, but Amiri would again be absent, having made three appearances for Germany in 2019.

Director of football Rudi Voeller praised Amiri for telling Leverkusen about a possible infection, saying, 'This procedure shows that our hygiene measures are working and that the players are sensitive to the corona issue.'

Germany has recorded 211,281 cases of the illness and 9,156 deaths, with the daily number of new infections reaching 950 in recent weeks.
