On Tuesday, August 4, 2020, Deputy President William Ruto embarked on a new project in Nyanza, valued at Ksh2 billion, marking his first major development initiative in the region.
The project, a partnership between the government of Kenya and that of Kuwait, aims to upgrade primary and secondary schools in Nyamira County, an area that has been ranked among the most lagging in terms of education.
According to Ruto, the project will benefit the sub-counties of West Mugirango, North Mugirango, Kitutu Masaba, and Borabu, which have been struggling with poor infrastructure and low educational standards.
"We are pleased that the Sh2 billion Government of Kenya/Kuwait upgrading of primary and secondary schools’ proposal has been concluded," Ruto stated.
During his visit, Ruto met with local leaders, including MPs, MCAs, and other stakeholders, to discuss development issues and oversee the project's implementation.
The move comes barely a month after President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered his Cabinet Secretaries to take over the inspection of government projects across the country, with Ruto being delegated the duty to inspect and oversee developmental projects.
However, Ruto's visit has been met with criticism, with some accusing him of using the opportunity for political mileage.
President Kenyatta had warned his Cabinet against using the opportunity for selfish gains, saying there was no room for vices in his administration.
