On track to become a major player in the region's energy landscape, Kenya is set to build a $5 billion nuclear power station in Tana River County by 2027, according to a report published on August 4, 2020, by Bloomberg on the Engineering News website.

The ambitious project is part of Kenya's plan to increase its electricity generation capacity to support the growing manufacturing sector. By 2031, the country expects demand for electricity to reach 22,000 megawatts, largely driven by industrial expansion.

As part of the project, the Kenya Nuclear Agency is assessing various technologies to identify the ideal reactor for the country, as noted in a report by the Kenya Nuclear Power and Energy Agency.

After evaluating three regions, a site in Tana River County has been selected for the construction of the Nuclear Power Plant. The plant will be developed with a concessionaire under a build, operate and transfer model, as reported by Bloomberg.
