Published on August 4, 2020, InterContinental Hotels Corporation Limited has announced plans to permanently close the InterContinental Nairobi, citing operational reasons.

The decision, which will result in the winding up of all operations in Kenya, will lead to the declaration of all employment positions within the hotel as redundant in 45 days.

The hotel has been facing financial difficulties, with a debt of approximately KSh717 million owed to Stanbic Bank in February 2019, exceeding its current income of KSh206 million by KSh511 million.

This is not the first hotel to face closure due to the pandemic; the Fairmont had previously closed its Norfolk and Mara Safari Club hotels and fired all employees due to the impact of the coronavirus on travel and uncertainty.
