Published on August 4, 2020, a scandal involving a Sh4 billion Covid-19 procurement scam has come to light, with Ivy Minyow Onyango, a 27-year-old lawyer and model, at its center.
According to investigations, Onyango's company, Kilig Limited, was awarded a tender to supply hundreds of thousands of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) at an inflated cost of Sh9,000 per kit, from the then market price of Sh4,500.
The Daily Nation reported that the fact that Kilig Limited had no proof or record of ability to supply such a big tender on such a short notice did not bother Kemsa executives, who are now under the radar of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.
Further investigations revealed that the actual beneficial owner of Kilig Limited is a vocal Jubilee politician, who has made his billions by securing contracts from government agencies and selling them to companies in exchange for a 10 per cent cut.
The politician was not named, but internet circles, especially according to blogger Robert Alai, point to Jubilee party Vice Chairman David Murathe as the man behind the scam.
Onyango was merely a front girl, and her company's awarding of the tender was a result of the politician's influence.
KEMSA is currently under probe for a Sh7 billion procurement scam.
