On August 3, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) turned the tables on three of its own detectives who had been using their positions to rob crime suspects.
The three detectives, William Mutua, Henry Maitai, and Jonathan Sankale, were arrested after a sting operation was conducted at the Baraka Gas Company in Matuu, Machakos County.
According to reports, the detectives had been using their positions to raid the gas company, confiscate mobile phones from workers, and transfer cash to their personal accounts via mobile money.
It is alleged that the detectives had been involved in a robbery with violence incident that occurred on July 31, where they allegedly stole Ksh. 370,000 from the gas company.
The detectives have since been disarmed and placed in police custody as the DCI continues with further investigations on the case.
Members of the public have been calling for the release of the detectives' mug shots, a common practice when suspects are arrested.
Meanwhile, the DCI has been stepping up its operations, with the Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) detectives apprehending a 34-year-old woman believed to be a terror suspect on August 3.
