On August 4, 2020, the Nyamira County Assembly suspended its sittings after a staff member tested positive for Covid-19.
Speaker Moffat Teya announced the closure of the House for 21 days, citing the need for further evaluation of the situation.
According to Teya, the House will revert to virtual meetings, with physical sessions only conducted for urgent legislative business requiring the presence of members.
"As an institution, we tried to see to it that basic preventive measures which include the provision of sanitisers and face masks are put in place. However, more needs to be done to win this war. Regrettably, there is already a positive case in the Assembly and contact tracing is going on," Teya said in a memo to staff members and Members of the Assembly.
County Health Executive Douglass Bosire confirmed that the staff member was tested in Kisii County and resides in the town where the case was documented.
The patient is currently receiving treatment at home and is under close monitoring by the County Surveillance and Emergency teams.
This is the eighth case of Covid-19 to be confirmed in Nyamira, with the County Assembly operating with a quarter of its regular employees since April this year.
