Kenya's economic turmoil has taken a toll on businesses, with eight tenants at Garden City Mall facing auction over unpaid rent.

According to a notice dated July 15, published as Gazette Notice 5425 by Maduwande Auctioneers, the landlord plans to auction off the businesses' assets on August 19.

The affected businesses include an African attire clothing store, a shoe store, a restaurant, and a nail bar.

The auction is expected to dispose of the businesses' day-to-day operation tools, including tables, vending machines, utensils, display counters, and electronics.

This is not an isolated incident, as Imax Kenya was auctioned at its iconic 20th Century Plaza theater over unpaid rent arrears, and items worth millions belonging to Tuskys Supermarket are set to be sold through public auction to recover over Sh12 million rent arrears.

As the country struggles to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses are finding it challenging to stay afloat due to thinning revenues and a shortfall in customer footfall.
