On August 3, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta issued a directive to close all bars indefinitely to curb the spread of COVID-19.
As a result, two unlicensed clubs in Machakos town, Diamond and New York, were shut down on August 3, 2020, in line with the presidential directive.
On August 4, 2020, ten revelers were arrested at the two clubs for flouting government regulations outlawing the sale of alcohol in bars.
The revelers were detained at Machakos Central Police Station awaiting arraignment in court.
According to Machakos Deputy OCS Jeophas Okoth, the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai had been instructed to permanently withdraw licenses of bars that would violate the new directive.
