On August 4, 2020, Hurricane Isaias brought devastation to the eastern United States, making landfall in North Carolina 40 miles southwest of Wilmington.
The storm, which had maximum sustained winds of 85mph, made landfall at 23:10 EDT (03:10 GMT) on Tuesday, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).
Isaias had previously caused the deaths of two people in the Caribbean and had been downgraded to a tropical storm before being recategorized as a category-one hurricane on Monday.
North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper declared a state of emergency on Friday and urged residents to be on the alert and stay safe.
"North Carolinians have had to dig deep in recent months to tap into our strength and resilience during the pandemic," Governor Cooper said. "But with this storm on the way, we have to dig a little deeper. Let’s keep each other safe from the wind and water as well as from the virus."
The storm is expected to weaken after making landfall, but further north, New York City is preparing for storm surges as well.
