Kenya's healthcare system is under immense strain as the country battles the COVID-19 pandemic. The situation has been exacerbated by the rapid mutation of the virus, which has made it increasingly difficult to diagnose.
According to reports, the few testing centers and laboratories in the country are overwhelmed, with sample testing taking up to five days to return results – or sometimes none at all. This has made contact tracing a nightmare, with key workers struggling to contain the spread of the virus.
Despite the challenges, the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) has accepted to cover COVID-19 patients in public hospitals, a move that has been welcomed by many. However, most insurance companies do not offer the cover, leaving patients to foot hospital bills.
As the pandemic continues to spread, it is essential that the government takes immediate action to cushion essential service providers, increase testing centers and equipment, and enhance sensitization on the need for voluntary testing and adherence to safety measures.
