As the world grapples with the Covid-19 pandemic, Kenya is no exception. The country has recorded over 22,000 infections and 400 deaths, with the economy severely impacted. The pain is palpable, but some individuals are taking advantage of the situation, engaging in egregious acts of theft and corruption.

Since the first case of coronavirus was reported in March, the government has received billions of shillings in donations to combat the crisis. By the end of last month, the country had obtained Sh223 billion, with the National Treasury redirecting funds to the Health ministry to support pandemic mitigation efforts.

However, instead of using the funds to equip hospitals, procure protective gear for health workers, and subsidize treatment costs, some individuals have misappropriated huge sums of money. The Health ministry is under scrutiny for allegedly misusing Sh1.3 billion from the World Bank, while Kemsa has been indicted for irregular tendering and awarding contracts to dubious characters.

Furthermore, multi-million-shilling equipment donated by Chinese billionaire Jack Ma was stolen at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is investigating some cases, but we demand that they be expedited and culprits charged in court.

The fate of those who steal cash and equipment meant for managing a deadly pandemic is severe punishment. We urge the authorities to take swift action and bring perpetrators to justice.
