On August 4, 2020, the government announced plans to publish the names of companies that expressed interest in leasing state-owned sugar factories on a long-term basis.
The move comes after governors from the Lake Region Economic Bloc called for the suspension of the leasing process, citing outstanding issues that could disadvantage farmers.
However, the government maintains that the list of companies interested in leasing Chemelil, Muhoroni, Miwani, Nzoia, and Sony Sugar companies would be made public, despite the opposition.
The Ministry of Agriculture claims to have held wide consultations with governors from sugarcane-growing regions and resolved all issues.
Only bidders with adequate resources to turn around the fortunes of the mills would be considered, according to the government.
