Blogger Edgar Obare Charged with Unlawful Disclosure of Personal Data

On August 3, 2020, Edgar Obare, a prominent Kenyan blogger, was charged before Kiambu Residents Magistrate Rita Orora with unlawful disclosure of personal data contrary to the data protection act.

According to the charge sheet, Obare allegedly disclosed the personal data of Natalie Wanjiru Githinji, including her passport details, on his social media accounts between July 9 and July 13, 2020.

Obare had published the passport details of Githinji, alleging that she had traveled to Dubai when international flights had been suspended.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released on a bond of 300,000 or a cash bail of 100,000.

The case will be mentioned on August 21, while the hearing is set for September 22.

Obare was also ordered not to post any statements on print media nor social media until the matter is heard and determined by the court.
