On July 28, 2020, a disturbing incident occurred at the Nairobi County Assembly, where Mlango Kubwa MCA Patricia Mutheu was brutally assaulted by four police officers.

According to reports, the officers, led by John Mwaniki Thathi, attacked Ms. Mutheu while she was seated alone at the county assembly's lounge, leaving her with grievous bodily harm and mental trauma.

Ms. Mutheu's lawyer, Cliff Ombeta, stated that his client was not only physically assaulted but also indecently touched by the officers, who knew they should have brought a female officer to handle her instead.

Following the incident, Ms. Mutheu was admitted to the Nairobi Women's Hospital for a day and presented her medical documents at the police station as she recorded her statement and filled a P3 form.

On Monday, Ms. Mutheu recorded her statement at Nairobi's Central Police Station, accompanied by her lawyer and Nairobi County Assembly Deputy Majority Whip Waithera Chege.

Police Spokesman Charles Owino declined to comment on the actions taken against the officers involved in the incident.

Interior CS Fred Matiang'i had previously condemned the police officers involved in the fracas and urged the Inspector-General of Police and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to follow up the matter.

The IPOA had already started their probe into the matter, with Chairperson Anne Makori stating that the investigation was progressing well and that if culpability was established, they would make appropriate recommendations to the relevant State agency.
