On August 3, 2020, the High Court ordered the Inspector General of Police to pay Sh5 million each to Sarah Muyera and Eunice Kajairo for the disappearance of their sons, Erickson Aluda and Brian Nzenze.
The two mothers' sons went missing in 2016 after being taken by police at Kawangware market. A witness reported that the police had stopped the boys on a boda boda and an altercation ensued, leading to their disappearance.
Two years after the court ruling, Muyera and Kajairo are still waiting for the money. They were told they would be guided on how to access the compensation, but nobody has followed up on the case.
'Everything went quiet. The horrible wait started,' says Muyera.
The state has appealed the ruling, and a new case is expected to start. The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) chairman, Nelson Havi, says getting the money will be a tall order due to the complexity of the law governing compensation.
LSK is planning to file a consolidated petition on behalf of the people still waiting for compensation from the government. For Muyera and Kajairo, the wait continues, and they join the list of many still waiting for justice.
