On August 3, 2020, a court in Nakuru ordered the detention of 14 suspects arrested in connection with the violent clashes that rocked Njoro Sub-County last week.
Chief Magistrate Elizabeth Usui directed that the suspects, including former Nessuit Ward MCA Joseph Miangari and a Kenya Defence Forces Officer, be detained at Bondeni and Njoro police stations for 10 days to allow police to conclude investigations.
The police, through an affidavit sworn by Sgt Joshua Tobolei, are investigating murder, promoting war-like activities, and incitement to violence.
Thousands of people were displaced in the clashes, which left five people dead and 83 others injured.
According to Rift Valley Regional Coordinator George Natembeya, initiatives aimed at quelling the situation have begun, including peace talks with leaders and discussions with the National Land Commission to find a solution to the ongoing land problem.
The government has deployed a contingent of about 200 police officers to maintain peace in the area.
