On Friday, August 7, 2020, a devastating accident occurred at the Mombasa port, claiming the lives of two people and injuring six others.
The incident happened at the Portside Freight Container Station, owned by Governor Hassan Joho's family, at around 5:10 pm.
The victims were identified as 44-year-old James Mwangi Gathendo and 35-year-old machine operator Vikash Singh.
The injured were taken to different hospitals in Mombasa, including Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital, where they were treated and later discharged.
According to a police report, the accident occurred when engineers from a private firm were commissioning bins for handling fertiliser at shed number 7/8.
Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) acting Managing Director Rashid Salim stated that the management would team up with relevant authorities to investigate the incident.
Coast Regional Commissioner John Elungata also confirmed that an investigation had been launched to establish the cause of the accident.
