This archive report was first published on 3 August 2020.

On Saturday morning, residents of Musutsu village in Lugari Sub County woke up to a disturbing scene: a cow had been slaughtered and its tongue cut off.

The incident occurred at around 2am, when Diana Afandi, the owner of the cow, heard a commotion outside her home. She peeped through the window and couldn't see her cow, prompting her to investigate further.

Upon finding the cow's carcass across the fence, Afandi discovered that the animal had a slit throat and its tongue had been removed, leaving the rest of the body at the scene.

The cow, which was worth Sh.70,000, was Afandi's main source of income, with proceeds from milk sales used to purchase her family's basic needs.

As news of the incident spread, tens of villagers gathered at Afandi's compound, trying to make sense of the motive behind the inhumane act.

Some villagers linked the incident to superstitions, while others called for security organs to launch investigations and step up night patrols in the area.
