On August 3, 2020, it was revealed that the Awori family had raised Sh. 800 million to bail out one of its members, Grace Wakhungu. The source of this money has sparked a debate that has cast the family as having a well-oiled cash machinery.
According to a report, the immediate family of Grace Wakhungu, consisting of former CS Judi and her siblings Ben Wakhungu and Susan Wakhungu-Githuku, raised Sh. 197 million. A nephew of the jailed granny donated Sh. 100 million, while her brother, former Vice President Moody Awori, contributed Sh. 135 million from his family and personal funds.
Other family members and friends also made significant contributions, including Dr. Mary Okello, the founding director of Makini Schools, who donated Sh. 28 million. The family of former Ugandan MP Aggrey Awori contributed Sh. 41 million, and the families of Wakhungu's deceased brothers, Hannington Awori and Prof Nelson Awori, donated Sh. 93 million for their kin.
Additionally, family members Christine Hayanga, Henry Awori, Willis Awori, and Ernest Awori raised a total of Sh. 54 million. A funds-drive organized by Wakhungu's family members locally and abroad separately raised Sh. 236 million.
