On August 3, 2020, the Gambia's government faced a significant challenge as three of its ministers tested positive for the coronavirus.

President Adama Barrow had gone into self-isolation just days earlier, after Vice President Isatou Touray contracted the virus.

Finance Minister Mambureh Njie, Petroleum and Energy Minister Fafa Sanyang, and Agriculture Minister Amie Fabureh were the latest to fall ill, according to a tweet from the presidency.

The Gambia, a country of approximately two million people, has recorded 498 coronavirus cases and nine fatalities since its first case was reported in March.

As part of its efforts to contain the spread of the virus, the Gambia had closed its air and land borders, restricted public transport, shut schools and markets, and made face masks compulsory.
