On August 7, Grace Wakhungu, mother of former Cabinet Secretary Judy Wakhungu, may be released from prison after her family raised Ksh800 million in bail.

According to a report by People Daily on August 3, 2020, the powerful Awori family organized a fundraiser and managed to raise the funds, surpassing the Ksh707 million fine imposed on her on June 25, 2020.

Wakhungu was handed a 69-year jail term after being accused of colluding with Sirisia MP John Waluke to defraud the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) Ksh297 million in 2009.

Meanwhile, Waluke's family has fallen short of the Ksh727 million fine imposed on him, with only Ksh250 million raised despite having allies plan a fundraiser for his bail.

Grace Wakhungu and Sirisia MP John Waluke were sentenced to prison on June 25, 2020, at the Milimani law courts.

‘The sentencing of granny is not something that was taken lightly by Wakhungu’s siblings, both here in Kenya and Uganda,’ a source from the family told People Daily.

‘In fact, we outdid ourselves by raising close to Sh800 million, being contributions from family members through the sale of assets locally and abroad, personal savings and ‘silent’ funds drives by friends,’ the source added.
