Passenger Dies at KNH After Being Ejected From Moving PSV Along Thika Road
Newsroom Updated 2 min read
A passenger who was pushed from a bus belonging to Nicco Movers Sacco, a public service vehicle (PSV) operator serving the Nairobi CBD–Thika corridor, has died, with his death confirmed on Friday afternoon at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), where he had been receiving treatment.
The incident involved a bus bearing registration number KDV 713J.
Video footage of the incident shows the passenger falling onto the road after being pushed from the moving bus, which then continued with its journey.
The victim was rescued and rushed to KNH by the owner of a private vehicle who recorded the incident and remained by his side throughout his treatment.
"Hello Cyprian. This bus, today morning, they pushed a guy off the bus and apparently the guy has passed on at Kenyatta National Hospital. The video was taken by the owner of a personal car, who took him to the hospital and has been there until the demise of the guy. Kindly, using your time, circulate this until the crew is arrested and the Sacco is held responsible."
The incident comes barely a day after another tragedy involving a PSV in Nairobi, where five people lost their lives and at least 12 others sustained injuries after a matatu travelling from the CBD to Komarock overturned along Enterprise Road in the Industrial Area.
Survivors of that crash recounted moments of panic before the vehicle lost control while reportedly engaging in dangerous manoeuvres commonly referred to as "nyoka nyoka", renewing debate over safety standards and crew conduct within sections of the public transport sector.
With two separate incidents drawing public attention within days of each other, fresh questions are being directed at PSV operators, crew conduct, and the enforcement of passenger safety regulations on some of the country's busiest commuter routes.
