On July 31, 2020, Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists' Union (KMPDU) acting Secretary-General Dr Chibanzi Mwachonda announced that he had tested positive for Covid-19.
Dr Mwachonda, who is in self-isolation, stated that he was in a stable condition and that contact tracing and testing of all close contacts was underway.
"On behalf of the National Executive Council, I would like to inform all KMPDU members and the general public that I have tested positive for Covid-19. I'm currently in a stable condition and under self-isolation. My family is safe, contact tracing and testing of all close contacts is ongoing," he said.
Dr Mwachonda attributed his contraction of the virus to his official duties, stating that the infection occurred while he was dispensing his duties.
He emphasized that coronavirus is in the widespread community transmission phase and that all Kenyans are at risk, but urged the public not to be fearful or stigmatize individuals or their families who have been affected.
Dr Mwachonda, who had been tested before traveling to Mombasa to celebrate Eid al-Adha, is experiencing a cough and stomach upsets but is otherwise well.
