Published on July 31, 2020, by Lolita Bunde, a beauty expert, warns that mascara can have serious effects on the eyes when not properly applied or handled.

Mascara is a must-have in makeup kits, but improper application or handling can have serious effects on the eyes. It not only makes our eyes pop but also gives eyelashes density and a luscious finish.

However, the eyes are delicate and prone to infections. To keep them clean and safe, it's essential to follow some basic rules when applying mascara.

  • Smudging mascara on your lashes is a common mistake. To avoid this, always apply mascara only to the tips of your eyelashes.
  • Sharing mascara is another thing to avoid. Bacteria can be harbored along the eye membrane and spread germs that can cause infections.
  • Adding liquid to mascara is not recommended. Tap water may seem clean, but it's not sterile enough and can allow harmful bugs into your mascara tube.
  • Applying lash-extending mascaras with contacts is not advisable. The microfibers can get trapped beneath the lens and expose you to infections.
  • Using mascara for more than three months is a sign that it's contaminated. If you notice any changes in the smell or texture, it's time to throw it away.

Before going to bed, always wash out all the mascara from your eyes to prevent the particles from accumulating and causing infection.
